January is a month of reflection but is also a month to look forward and prepare for the New Year. A time to look inwards and realise what you really want out of 2018. Is your current job not fulfilling you anymore? Are you bored? Is there no room for career progression? Then maybe it’s time to move forward and a make a fresh start elsewhere. We at Star are experts in finding you your perfect fit. Here are a few ways to prepare yourself for the move.
1. Update your CV.
Can you remember the last time you even looked at your CV? Think of all you have achieved over the last few months. Pop in relevant information, remove outdated, non-relevant experience. If you are applying to multiple different jobs, it is a good idea to tailor your CV depending on the job.
2. Do your research.
When you see a role that really appeals to you, delve into the job spec and research the company. Talk to your recruiter in depth, they are there to help you out and give you all the support you need. Ask about what the role entails and how your skills and experience match the role.
3. Join/Update LinkedIn.
If you’re not already on LinkedIn, get on it! It’s the first port of call that recruiters use to source and contact candidates. It’s basically an online CV. Treat it like one, update it on your skills, experience, awards, volunteer work etc. A healthy LinkedIn profile looks very attractive to future employers. There is also a feature on LinkedIn where you can let recruiters know you are open to new opportunities, this is not visible to people in your current company. Twitter is also really useful, following recruitment agencies is a really good idea. They generally pop up their job vacancies on their Twitter profile.
4. Be resilient.
Maybe the first job you apply for won’t go your way but that doesn’t mean you should stop trying. Your recruiter is there fighting the battle alongside with you. Keep going and keep the idea that a better job, more suited to you is on the horizon. Make this year, the year you move forward and feel happy in your work.
